Advice please?
Apr 30 2011, 9:06 PM EDT
This isn't a super big problem but I figure there's no better place to ask than here...I am a Christian and a lot of Christians don't believe in ghosts, spirits, magic or any of those sorts of things. I believe completely though, and though I do love my God and am happy with my religion, I still want to be able to explore the paranormal and the realm of magic more. I know that in the Bible it says that there are spirits and magic is real, is there a way to practice it without... I dunno, condemning my soul or anything? Can anyone help me with this? Even opinions are good, I just want to hear other peoples' perspectives on this. Do you find this valuable? |

"This isn't a super big problem but I figure there's no better place to ask than here...Hey Aethelthruth, Soooo..... just in my experience in biblical studies at school and knowledge of what-have-you... this is what i say: The main reason the bible says to avoid said curiosities is mostly due to what-could-happen to your soul. To see a demon or spirit or even look for them is not what is condemning, it would be to turn your back on the right path that would allow you to be a part of God again (ie the path of righteousness). This is, (according to the bible, people, don't explode) what happened with Solomon. According to the texts, when practicing crafts and dealing with spirits, you stray from the idea that God is the ultimate goal, and the spirits could have a... well... distracting affect. Basically saying "Hey, look over here! Why are you going over there? There's no need to go over there, this is all you need right here." I know most of you may not agree with me, but this is speaking from a christian point of view (not that i'm christian but i did go to school for theology, so i know SOMETHING of what i'm going on about.) Hope that helped. Do you find this valuable? |

Well if you go by the Old Testament, NO! If you practice any kind of magic you are condemming your soul. However Jesus died for our sins. According to God, all sins are equal. The New Testament preaches more about love and forgiveness. Study more about the Bible as in the liturature/history. Ancient liturature(including Hebrew writings) speaks of godS, but the Hebrew God(God of Abraham) is suppose to be God of All. The ancient writings also speak of a "main" god. The Bible also mentions divine beings procreating with humans creating other species. The Hebrew Bible(is the main bible in just about every home/hotel) claims these species to be "giants". My personal opinion of why God doesn't want us doing these things because we may learn more than what He wants us to know. Such as forbidding Adam and Eve from eating from the tree of life...God says Angels and Demons(fallen angels) are real and on Earth...look into that. That is of the supernatural community.

If you're going around doing something you're not supposed to, and say "well, it's ok cuz he took my sins away", that's not the same thing. You'd have to be careful, is all. Yes in the bible it talks of tons of other gods and spirits and demons and the giants you mentioned, and of course you could study them. My opinion is not that God doesn't want us to know about them, it's that we are safer when we don't know about them and trust entirely to him. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. Do you? |

Funny. Thanks for the Gold stars, are these stars the same given out in kindergarten? I just love those. :p I believe in all kinds of things. My imagination keeps me going. If I didn't have that, then I will be a sex-less zombie, and that would suck.Anyways yes you will have to be careful. I don't mean to go off an continue to do wrong and say to yourself "Hmm God will forgive me once I repent" This is a choice you will have to make and you will have to deal with the consequences, good or bad. The Bible states that those practitioners of the Magic arts will not be allowed into the gates of Heaven. So no, there is no way, God has forbid the use and study of Magic. What you might call the "paranormal" all depends on what your definition of that word is. Personally, things such as "Ghosts" (not spirits, there is a difference) or Cryptied are not some "magical" thing, but rather something that can be explained with cold hard facts. Ghosts for example, are not Souls left behind, the Bible teaches that when one dies, they go to either Heaven or Hell, there is no lingering. Rather, Ghosts are either (most commoly) tricks of light and imagination, (very rare, but have been recorded) Imprints of Strong emotions caused by the brain and imprinted onto sensitive (high silicon and quartz) areas.[ I know this last seems weird lol, but there have been test, google, "make your own ghost" for other examples). But then you mighty ask, "Why did God forbid it?" Personaly I do not know, but if you want my theory, take a look at most world Magics, how are they preformed? 9/10 it is by invoking some spirit or other worldy power to do your biding, and that other 1/10 noramly involes drawing on waht they call a "inward force", yet how do they do that? again, by invoking a "spirit guide" or Familar. Fallen Angels, aka demons. Basicly all magic involves some form of Demon contract. Again this is just my theory, but you see where I am coming from. Do you find this valuable? |

Lord have mercy, I'm starting to think that religion is just something the government created to scare us common folk. :( Don't get me wrong, I do believe in God. I guess I've just lost my faith in religions. I used to be able to sense spirits and stuff, but ever since I had a dream that my grandpa (whose dead by the way) told me he was going home and i couldn't go with him, I have lost my sixth sense. Catholic, Baptist, Christianity, etc started thousands of years ago with the Hebrews. Basically the Bible is the history of Israel and when they became a people and what God of Adram (Abraham), Isaace, Moses, etc did for them during those early times. It is in the Bible that witchcraft of any sorts is forbidden, this is the old testament. Sorry about your sixth sense. There are several things that come to mind that may be a cause of your sixth sense blockage. You could be slightly traumitized (post traumatic) from your experience with your grandpa. You could be losing your sense due to growing older. Or you may be out of practice/unable to adequately practice for whatever reasons. I use to hone in on something like ESP. Where I knew bad things were going to happen. Usually death to a family member. Now that I am older, I am not so much in touch with that skill any more. However I think it is because my mind is clouded with my life stresses which is preventing me from it. When I am truly happy, my extra sense is in full effect, but that has been near impossible lately. Maybe this can help you??? Do you find this valuable? |

I think you're right.Every since we moved from Alabama, it's like everything has been void. I don't feel the same, what I used to see and feel, I no longer feel. I guess it's because I didn't want to move, but really didn't have a choice in the matter. Gotta go where the jobs are so, yeah . . . I've been getting over it and getting back to myself slowly but surely. Thanks for the kindness sugamom. Do you find this valuable? |

Aethelthruth, some believe that religion is magical itself and that faith gives strength to the soul. Studying phenomena such as ghosts and demonic possession are directly linked to the Christian faith with Heaven and Hell as points of reception for those that have gone into the afterlife. The Holy Ghost is a presence of spirit. Demonic possession was a Christian encumbrance that needed a priest to perform an exorcism. So it should be fine to study these kind of phenomenon. The danger in this would be the study of the Occult or in becoming a student of un-holy magics. Study the "magic" of faith as it pertains to otherworldly entities and you will be enlightened in the name of God. 2 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

"This isn't a super big problem but I figure there's no better place to ask than here...It says not to practice 'witchcraft' or 'sorcery'. These are just two kinds of magic (or were at the time the bible was written/translated. As long as you practice the right kinds of magic, you should be fine. Watch out though, and good luck. It's all about terminology and understanding how it was once used and such. Technicalities. Yes, the Bible is full of references to what we now call the "paranormal," as you say. The truth is it's all very dangerous, but not all of it is evil. A lot of it is good. Even in the Old Testemant, all magic was NOT condemned. I know religion causes some of the most INTENSE arguements of all time, but I'm just trying to help, so please no one attack me.
