Fairies in mythology often take on human form to, say, join in festivaties.

They were known to be extremely good-looking but unfamiliar with human customs. A human that shows tact by ignoring when a fairy in disguise makes a mistake, is likely to be rewarded.

i dont know about a specific kind of fairy.....but I think that i fthe fairy is a changeling(traded with a human baby, sometimes with out the human parents knowledge or consent) then they have heavy glamour( like...uhh..hides the wings and other odd fairy characterists in looks department) and they age..but im not so sure on the height thing..sorry its not all that good, but I do hope it helped a little adn its just my own personal opinion, Do you find this valuable?

Elves are known to be beatiful and can be 6 feet in height, As far as fairies they prefer to be small, gnomes can appear big if they wanted to, but they too, like being small. and yes they eventually die.

Well than wouldnt that be more of a witch? That sounds like a good discription of one. Except for the detail that they are supposed to be spirits.

Correction: Wouldn't that be a human?
