i don't know if I'm too late, but i just got on. A nymph is a minor nature goddess typically associated with a particular location or landforms, other nymphs were part of the retinue of a god, such as Dionysus, Hermes, or Pan, or a goddess, generally Artemis, the nymphs of this always in the shape of young nubile maidens. Echo was a mountain nymph, an Oread, who loved her own voice. Zeus, the king of Olympians, loved to consort with nymphs, visiting Earth to pursue them sometimes (Zeus had many love affairs if you check.) Of course Zeus's jealous wife Hera, who-like any woman- got suspicious, she left Mt. Olympus in an attempt to catch Zeus with the nymphs. And sometimes the beautiful young Echo would tell Hera long and interesting stories, distracting Hera while Zeus took advantage of the moments to ravish the other mountain nymphs. Ah. The trickery, and when Hera discovered this, she punished the talkative Echo by taking her voice, except in the foolish repetition of anothers shouted words. so Echo could only repeat the voice of another... Tragic. Eventually Echo fell in love with Narcissus, she followed him one day while he was hunting stags, longing to address him, but couldn't speak herself. When Narcissus heard footsteps he shouted, "who's there?" Echo responded, repeating his words, And so it went until Echo finally showed herself and rushed to embrace him. He pulled away from the nymph and vainly told her to leave him alone-what a jerk, right? He left Echo heartbroken and alone. She spent the rest of her life in lonely glens pining away for the love she never knew, crying until all that was left was her voice. In another version Echo cries until she is stone and an invisible echo. A ghost, a spirit that haunts the Earth. 4  out of 5 found this valuable. Do you?
