I did read somewhere that Tolkien coined the word Elves and Elven, as he did Dwarves and Dwarven. Though they are real words in the English dictionary now, when he first wrote his novels, they were considered errors in his spelling. Though tall and powerful Elves did exist during and before the Medieval era, their powers became some what distorted with that of the Fair folk, which is why they were said to live in woods, original Elves did not live in woods at all, but rather in the land of light, and the Dark Elves lived underground and were almost identical to Dwarves. I believe that in Britain, Elves were treated as outsiders and the cause of many ill events in rural towns, such as things called Elf Locks. 1  out of 1 found this valuable. Do you?

Tolkian seriously came up with 'Elves' and 'Dwarves'? I thought they were the correct dictionary plurals. Didn't know that.

I'm thinking the concept of elfs stemmed from the huldrefolk?

As i said, i read it somewhere, i can not remember where. Though yes, it is now a correct plural form, though when he wrote his novels they were not correct. The plural of elf was elfs and dwarf was dwarfs. I also think he coined the terms Elven and Dwarven, actually it may have been those two. It may be worth checking out, even published books are not always a 100% accurate source of truthful knowledge. Do you find this valuable?
