I think Captain Kirk answered that question many times over. What I would like to know is if the union of 2 different life forms can create a successful offspring that will not kill it's host parent. And what kind of sexually transmitted diseases could you end up with?

Indeed, would we be compatible with life from another world? And as you said, imagine the alien diseases we could get. Currently when we bring things back from other worlds, by using machines, they have to be kept in sterile environments. I assume for both the preservation of the sample, but perhaps also caution, just in case it reacts badly with our natural environment.
