Chaos Theory
Nov 18 2009, 1:00 AM EST | Post edited: Nov 18 2009, 1:00 AM EST
So, just the other day I saw a movie that really shook me. It's called, The Butterfly Effect. (It's on youtube btw and you can see the whole movie. It's split into 12 parts). Has anyone seen it? Well anyway, the movie uses the Chaos Theory, more commonly known as the Butterfly Effect. Why? Well here's a good explanation: The phrase refers to the idea that a butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that may ultimately alter the path of a tornado or delay, accelerate or even prevent the occurrence of a tornado in a certain location. The flapping wing represents a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale alterations of events. Had the butterfly not flapped its wings, the trajectory of the system might have been vastly different. While the butterfly does not "cause" the tornado in the sense of providing the energy for the tornado, it does "cause" it in the sense that the flap of its wings is an essential part of the initial conditions resulting in a tornado, and without that flap that particular tornado would not have existed. I just thought it was really interesting. Anyone else baffled by this? It really makes you think, doesn't it?

not just that, but its like the ripples of water. a single drop affects everything. and if you think about how many things go one at once its a huge amount of things that affect your life. Do you find this valuable?

Yeah that too. All the lives you affect, all the things that change in different ways because of any little thing you do. *shivers* It's crazy. And all of it is totally unpredictable. Do you find this valuable?

Err...you would. But well, I have also read about chaos theory in the book 'Jurassic Park'. It's true what you say, the book also says that chaos theory is a very broad modern theory used to study complex unpredictable systems such as weather which is impossible to predict despite what meteorologists say, where a butterfly flaps its wings in Peking and weather in New York is different. Something to do with non-linear dynamics and fractal curves, it says...dunno what they are, but interesting really... Do you find this valuable?
