The Devil
Jul 11 2008, 10:42 PM EDT Did you know that the devil didn't exeist in Christian mythology until around 1100's because they wanted to get more followers. So they named many things that were the devil, like the snake in the garden. Orriganily an evil snake, now the devil... 10 out of 12 found this valuable. Do you? |

RE: The Devil
Jul 12 2008, 4:45 AM EDT Yup. That is very correct. Same goes for the word Satanist. Did you know it DOES NOT stand for the follower of Satan? It actually stands for those men and women who shun Christ for the sake of Science. Christianity coined the term to mislead people and again gain more followers. The same goes for the stories that originated behind the name. Only within history did the concept change to what it is now considered. 1 out of 2 found this valuable. Do you? |

Jul 12 2008, 2:15 PM EDT Few. For a moment I thought you were calling me that. Times change as do perceptions. For example, the word Dunce is a word of insult, but the origin is from a great thinker's name which meant high importance to be even called that! Do you find this valuable? |

RE: The Devil
Oct 24 2008, 11:35 AM EDT you are right in some respect. There was no devil then. When we as people began to sin and run a muck more than was deemed acceptable, the church decided (in it's infinite wisdom.....not) that they had to curtail this problem before it turned into something that the "church" couldn't handle. Therefore, they simply gave the evil everyone knew of already a form, an identity. This is where your snake comes into play, in that when they gave evil a form it was the Devil, who of course cant take many forms....ie.. your snake. Well he had to have an origin, what better place than heaven and have your ass thrown out to show what will happen to us if we sin against God and the Mother church, right? To organized religion loosing its mighty control on people who they have taught, bullied and even murdered to keep going, there had to be something that would, move shall we say the people back in the right direction. so, the church started labeling things evil, and of course anything of the devil was evil and if you associated with evil ...ie the devil or sin then you would damn your soul and you were forever more against God and the church. 1 out of 1 found this valuable. RE: The Devil
Friday, 12:46 PM EST well, as Isaac Asimov puts it in his Guide to the Bible, the thing happened when the jews (centuries before any christian church existed), being expelled from the country they owned by the babilonians, they met lots of other cultures and ways of viewing the universe (cosmogonies), so influenced mainly by persian culture, the idea of angels and demons entered in jewish mythos, when before that, all they said was that God was one among others, but being the jewish God, it would be the right one for them. After persian influence, besides of the idea of angels and demons entering the jewish ideas, also the idea of one and only God began to spring in there, qualifying all other gods from other cultures as mere idols or as demons disguised...
