Your totem can range from a little lizard to the mightiest elephant!I'm sure youWhich animal is your totem?'re familiar with the words 'totem pole', but what does totem mean? Animal? Before we're born, we choose our angels. We choose our spirit guides. We also choose our totem, an animal spirit that is mostly invisible but is constantly at your side. On rare occasions will a totem reveal itself, and when it does it's usually to defend you from harm. How do you tell? It's simple...what animal do you find yourself drawn to? It can't be your pet, because your pet is alive. It can't be a past pet, either which would mean that you would have gone through a brief period without a totem.

There have been stories over the years about totems. One woman was being chased and then finally pinned. Suddenly, a huge cobra reared up in front of her, faced her attacker and bared its fangs viciously. Another account which I particularly find amusing was about a man living in an apartment complex. He never got a chance to see his totem, a panther, but the owner constantly complained of seeing a large black cat sitting in the man's window of his no-pets-allowed apartment.

What totem you have also defines who you are. Perhaps someone with an elephant totem is a strong leader but mostly caring and gentle.

Totems bring to mind the Indians and their beliefs. Perhaps this is where the whole belief of animal spirits started. Some Indians wore small carvings of animals or their bones so that hunting that animal would be easier.

Naming your animal totem can really help the bonding process.

Some name examples are:
(Arabic) Tiger='Nemer.'
(Greek) Elephant='Elephas'.
('unknown to me') Cat='Felina.'
(Swahili) Elephant='Tembo.'
(Swahili) Cat='Paka'.
(Bulgarian) Wolf='Valko'.
(Swahili) Leopard='Chui'.
(Swahili) Snake='Nyoka'.
(Swahili) Cheetah='Duma'.
(Swahili) Deer='Paa'.
(Swahili) Donkey='Punda'.
(Swahili) Hyena='Fisi'.
(Swahili) Monkey='Kima'.
(Swahili) Sheep='Kondoo'.
(Swahili) Lion='Simba'.
(?Norwegian?) Snow Leopard='Sabu'.

Ever since I could remember the fox has been in my life; through my dreams or making appearances here or there in my life. I even remember writing down in elementary school wanting to become a fox when I was older :P I have researched the foxes symbolisms and personality and have come to the conclusion that the fox must me my totem because of how similar we are.
Patience, wisdom, intelligence, adaptability. Fox people can be high strung or exceedingly calm, charismatic or mysterious, prone to stand out or blend in, keep peace or make mischief. They tend to be partially rooted in the spirit world, living day to day in sort of a 'world between'. Foxes are a strong symbol of femininity, shape-shifting, illusion, and magic. Depending on my day I am all theses things, explaining why I am bipolar sometimes.

Saihelia Seeing Totems? 5 Nov 20 2012, 3:04 AM EST by Anonymous

Hey guys! ^.^ I have some questions. All my life, I always seem to see things that no one else sees around me. For years, it had just been strange shapes slipping through my peripheral vision; but in the last year, i've been getting better at "seeing stuff" It's not just unidentifiable creatures and ghosts and such that i see; i've started seeing animals too. It started three months ago. I had a dream that my girlfriend and i were in the woods, and a crow came to me. He told me to name him, then said i should open my eyes more. After that, i've been seeing ghost-like animals near some of my friends. I asked a friend of the family, a wise-woman, about all this, and she said i may be seeing Totems. She instructed me to try seeing my girlfriend's Totem, so i did. To my surprise, i saw two things. A butterfly (female) and a buck (male). When i asked her, my girlfriend told me she was a two-soul, or Bi-gender. It shocked me a little that I was able to see something like that, even if its only for a brief moment.
My main question is, if i really am seeing Totems, why am I seeing them? And how can i be sure that's what i'm seeing? Also, dumb question, should i try talking to them? Or is that a bad idea?

I have no Idea what my totem animal might be. I am very open minded about myths and mythical creatures, spirits and animals in general. Im sure no matter what totem animal I have it would be a great protector and we would share some kind of bond :)
