I'm reluctant to contradict, however the Greeks did have sphinxes, or more accurately, a sphinx. This is where the legend of her riddle originates from. According Greek mythology she sat on a rock near Thebes where she posed her riddle to each passerby, strangling those unable to solve it. At the solving of her riddle by Oedipus the Sphinx was so mortified that she jumped from the rock, committing suicide.

Was the riddle not: "I walk on 4 legs in the morning, 2 at midday, and 3 at night. What am I?" The answer then was: I I I I I MAN!

I'm pretty sure English translation of the riddle is: What animal is that which in the morning goes on four feet, at noon on two, and in the evening upon three? With the answer being: Man who in childhood creeps on hands and knees, in manhood walks erect, and in old age with the aid of a staff.
I believe the term 'man' is used in its general form (as a referral to human-kind), which, although a form of feminism, can in this case be considered as non-denominational.
SOURCE: My school emblem is the Sphinx, upon entrance I received a sphinx pin and card explaining its significance which included a recital of the Sphinx's riddle.

If there were more than one Shpinx ( Sphinxes?) would they have all asked the same riddle? Rumors would have spread that the riddle had been solved. So did they each have a different riddle? or were they all so confident that no one could answer that they only used one riddle? i mean, really, anyone could solve that nowadays so if a sphinx is real would they use a different riddle?
