The Neko was often said to be a Human gifted with the power to turn into a cat.This mythical creature was created back in the 1950's because Japenese manga liked the idea of a cat-human Hybrid.Most of the time a Neko will apper to be human and can show small pieces of the cat it is like its human ears will turn to cat ears and they could even grow a tail!

I was originally going to bludgeon you with the banhammer untill you turn into a fine cloud of red mist, but you actually said they aren't real creatures
