Don't judge, Athena is my fave goddess and the goddess of wisdom. She also created spiders and olives, both with good reason, so she must have had a reason for this.

Mythology is a fabulous vehicle for getting powerful messages across.....whether for good or bad. Joseph Campbell once said that myths are the collective dreams of a culture. The dream used to be that the Feminine was sacred, powerful, wise, beautiful, and abundantly fertile. Medusa was once worshiped in this way. But when the values of society's culture changed, Medusa's attributes, as well as all of our other visions of our Sacred Mother, were conquered, subdued, vandalized, and changed. In Medusa's case, she was twice-raped; by Poseidon and Perseus. Even Athena, Medusa's replacement image in mythology, symbolically raped and abandoned Her. Society wanted to make good and sure that the Sacred Feminine was stripped of all of her influences.

heres Medusa's back story...she was beautiful as aphrodite but soon aphrodite got very jeolus and so she asked athena for help to make medusa a monster athena said yes and so athena made her ugly as a snake and gave medusa anake hair and then she had the power to turn people to stone....^_^

Well... from what Ive been told, she was once a beautiflul mortal. So beautiful that many around her said her looks would rival if not have already surpassed Athenas. She was chased by many suitors, but politely turning each one down. Until her eyes met those of Poseidon. She fell in love. When they slept at Athenas temple, Athena became pissed and cursed Mudusa. Turning her hideous. I think.

Wow. You know what, that guy who said that Medusa's ugly and a hoe really doesn't know anything about greek mythology. She didn't want to do it. She was RAPED by Poseidon in Athena's temple. She was being chased at first and then went inside her temple to pray to Athena to save her but then she got raped there. Athena, disgusted, turned her into that monster.
