I believe that there is more to the Goblin lore than one paragraph. However, you do have the gist of it, they were originally, pranksters and tricksters, who wandered the wilderness. Over time they went from mischief to malice, and became quite harmful to humankind. A Goblin could lead wayfarers from the well worn path's and road's,in the guise of a light, or a cloaked figure holding a light, the traveller would follow them for miles at a time, only to find the light vanish preluded by a vile cackle. They would realise that they, themselves were lost, or teetering on the edge of a gaping chasm, with just a single step to their own demise. In stories they started to appear as troglodyte type creatures, living underground and in caves, generally growing in a cruel and malicious temperament.

Well like I said, storytellers needed horeds of some stotic creature that was evil. The goblin was a perfect choice because it allowed some vunerabilites for the protaganist.
