The fair folk. Not of the Race of Adam. Elfin and elfish are Welsh variants of elven and elvish - the Welsh pronounce f as v. They are not truly immortal as they can be killed, though if they are extremely careful ...
Take care what you wish for

I thought this notice was in Language by Edward Sapir, published in1921, by Harcourt Brace. I cannot find it again in that book. The "fair" people lived in the forest. They were long-headed with sparse body hair, unlike Indo-uropeans/Aryans who are square-headed, darker, and with thicker hair. The language of the "fair" people was true Germanic. Such words as "frau," and "stein" were only found from their language. They must have been absorbed by the invading Aryans about 10,000 years ago or earlier, about the time of the end of the last major Ice Age. In his best novel, Ivanhoe, Sir Walter Scott describes a serf as blond. His name is Wamba. The "w" names and words seem to come from their language. They were real people, addapted for a relatively warm climate with a thick fog or cloud cover. They were "Teutonic" rather than "Alpine." (Sapir, Harvest Books, page 211)

Firstly, Elves do not look like legolas!! J.R.R. Tolkien made up his view of elves (even though it's a pretty cool view of them), but they're not actually what they look like, I think the real elves look a little less human.

I did read somewhere that Tolkien coined the word Elves and Elven, as he did Dwarves and Dwarven. Though they are real words in the English dictionary now, when he first wrote his novels, they were considered errors in his spelling. Though tall and powerful Elves did exist during and before the Medieval era, their powers became some what distorted with that of the Fair folk, which is why they were said to live in woods, original Elves did not live in woods at all, but rather in the land of light, and the Dark Elves lived underground and were almost identical to Dwarves. I believe that in Britain, Elves were treated as outsiders and the cause of many ill events in rural towns, such as things called Elf Locks.
