The only story I have found on the modern star trek changling or shapeshifter is the skinwalker. Out of Native American folklore, the skinwalker is a person with the ability to change into anything(mostly animals) they wanted. I have recently heard there is a canadian native tribe that are shapeshifters. I have not been able to confirm this though.

I thought changleings were ill childeren of the mytholigical creatures left in place of a human child to die in a human home for a healthy new child from a human.

If you are familiar with any world of darkness changeling (the lost) lore, then you would know the replacement to be called a fetch. The changelings in the world of darkness are actually people who escape from the faries (known as the fay) and come back into the mortal world as a changed person.

What faeries do is simply evil, gnomes, goblins, and trolls only change babies usually, this will only scare the Mother.
