What is your Favorite Creature, Myth, or Story?

My Favorite Myth is the Karkadann. It is a very interesting verson of Unicorn. I rather like the thought of it being a predater not just a pretty horse that grands wishes. This myth gives the creature a more realistic quality.
The Karkadann, or Lord of the Desert, is a mythical creature said to inhabit the grassy flatlands and deserts of India, Persia and Northern Africa. The Karkadann is said to be the size of a bull with a somewhat wolf like appearance (and eating habit) and possess a horn which protruded from atop its skull. The horn, said to resemble an ivory spike, stuck straight up from the creature’s cranium and was said to be used as a means of gouging the Karkadann’s victims, but also was reportedly used as a means of self defense. The horn was hollowed with holes, which when the desert wind blew throw them made a whistle like a flute. The whistle attracted animals (especialy birds) and humans too, that then became this predator's prey.

Although the Karkadann is thought to have been an undeniably ruthless predator it was not with out its weaknesses. It is said that a bird known as the ringdove was able to charm the Karkadann. As the legend states, the ringdove would perch upon the Karkadann’s horn and sing its song, the song would please its Karkadann host causing the creature to become calm and docile. Ancient historians who studied the Karkadann, like 4th century Greek historian Ctesias, noted that this fearsome animal so favored the song of the ringdove that it would often make its home near their nests, protecting the tiny song birds from any potential harm. Although the ringdove’s effects on the Karkadann may be purely based in myth, there are some investigators who suspect that the Karkadann its self may be based in fact.

Here I leave it to you. What is your favorite folklore? What do you know about it? Why do you like it.

thank you. :) I've also got a liking for the hollow-back fey myths. They're are just so hard to find on the e-net, though I believe most are German baised, the only fey you can find with google is irish myth and greek paintings.

The legend of the Dobharchú (Water hound) is my favorite and if you know where to look, evidence of the actual event can still be clearly seen in the town it took place in.

Curse of the crying boy- it is said that in a small village in England there was a witch, and at least 12 houses, but when the village found out she was a witch, and they killed her. After that two houses burned down and there were no survivors, but the only thing the village found out of the ashes of both houses were two pictures, both of a crying little boy. That's my favorite.

Oh, and the legend of the black eyed children, black eyed children are demons that look like people, accept for one flaw, there eyes are all black, ALL black. Don't ever let them into your personal space, they trick you into thinking "please let me in I have to use the bathroom" or "let us in its cold out here!" And usually the people that let them in are turned into a black eyed person or there bodies are found or they just turn up missing.
